Hello friends, today I will tell you about the differences between sharepoint online and on-premise. As you know, many companies use different versions of SharePoint. So, if you are going to use SharePoint, how will you decide which version to use?

We can evaluate the differences between Sharepoint online and on-premise under the following 7 different headings.

  • Dedicated server hardware
  • Updates
  • Backing up data
  • Security of data
  • Pricing
  • Customize
  • Software development

Let’s examine each of these items separately.

1. Dedicated Server Hardware

Since Sharepoint online uses Microsoft cloud data center, it does not require any server system or installation. On the Sharepoint on-premise side, you need to purchase a special hardware server and do the installation and configuration yourself.

2. Updates

All updates are made by Microsoft on the Sharepoint online side and there is nothing you need to do in this section. On the Sharepoint on-premise side, special patches released by Microsoft must be installed by you in a controlled manner.

3. Backing Up Data

Backup operations on the Sharepoint online side can be done by Microsoft in a limited way and with special products. On the Sharepoint on-premise side, this solution must be made entirely by your IT team with a suitable solution.

4. Security of Data

On the Sharepoint online side, MFA login security is protected according to the security methods and procedures determined by Microsoft, such as the M365 login method. On the Sharepoint onprem side, this process must be provided entirely by your IT teams.

5. Pricing

On the Sharepoint online side, pricing is charged based on the Microsoft 365 package, with a monthly licensing fee per user. On the Sharepoint on-premise side, there are different charges for many steps such as license, server and maintenance.

6. Customization

On the Sharepoint online side, limited customization can be made within the scope of the opportunities provided by the cloud system. On the Sharepoint on-premise side, you can make unlimited customizations as you wish.

7. Software Development

You can use software development technologies on the client side by Sharepoint online and these features are not allowed on the server side. On Sharepoint online, you can develop both on the client side and on the server side.

As you can see in the items above, if we need to explain them under the heading of basic items, we can collect them under 7 main headings. You can increase these titles more.
